Chemehuevi whirling log basket. A couple of minor wear spots along rim of basket. Other than these the basket is clean and in very good condition. Tight weave throughout with good color.

The whirling log or swastika form is an ancient symbol. It is a symbol that stands for "well-being" or "good luck". The form has been used by many cultures for centuries before being perverted by Nazi Germany and WWII. Up to WWII the symbol appeared on Apache, Navajo and Pueblo ceremonial and decorative objects. After learning of the Nazi association the symbol was basically discontinued from use. It does appear occasionally post WWII on Navajo blankets. Jewelry with the symbol is usually from before 1940. In Native American culture the symbol stood for the wind and its four directions.
